Known as the "Father of the Port of Los Angeles," Phineas Banning built this historic residence in 1864, several years after he founded the town of Wilmington. The 23-room Banning House is widely regarded as the finest example of domestic Greek Revival architecture in Southern California. The house interiors have been carefully restored to their original Victorian beauty - 18 rooms are open to the public. The Banning House was designated a California Historical Landmark in 1935, Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument No. 25 in 1963, and added to the National Register of Historic Places in May 1971.

Much like their wedding venue, the magnificent Greencrest Manor, the Ford House host an elegant and sophisticated setting. It was a pleasure to work with the outstanding staff at the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House. Despite other engagement session shoots occurring at the same time, we hardly noticed anyone else on the manor grounds. It was an absolute pleasure and we look forward to returning to Edsel & Eleanor Ford House for future engagement sessions. Each wedding has us falling in love over and over again—it reminds us that there is wonder and mystery in this shared life we all build together.

This house was created by Frank Gehry for him and his family in 1978. He changed an existing house and turned it into something truly unique. The neighbors may not have been thrilled with what the home became but it looks like something really fun to see in person. Karr said the Ford House plans to keep the public informed on the progress of the project through educational programs for children and adults. Karr said leaders of the historic Grosse Pointe Shores landmark spent a couple of years working on the grant process, and work on the estimated three-year project could start either later this year or early next year. The white, yellow, and blue color scheme was reiterated in the nearby rose garden. The exterior was fashioned in Briarhill sandstone from Ohio; the interior was paneled and plastered in the seventeenth-century English manner. Construction took three years—from 1926 to 1929—and no detail was overlooked. A different intricate pattern adorned each of the ten plaster ceilings, and the gabled roof was covered with limestone tiles—period and new—laid by English workers imported for the purpose. These artisans knew how to make a proper Cotswold roof, laying smaller and smaller tiles as they ascended toward the peak.
On their early scouting trips abroad, the Fords were accompanied by their art history mentor, William R. Valentiner, the new director of the Detroit Institute of Arts. Valentiner helped lay the groundwork for the paintings, furniture and decorative objects that filled their rooms. Around every corner, you can discover world-class art and design pieces collected by art-lovers Edsel and Eleanor. They displayed paintings by Vincent Van Gogh and Diego Rivera – a personal friend of Edsel – classic European portraiture, modern-style sculptures, and ancient Asian and African artifacts. Like many of us do, the Fords updated spaces in their home as time passed.

I came here during the 2019 Museum of the Arroyo Day and really enjoyed it. The homes are a museum dedicated to the settlement and development of Southern California in its first 100 years. There are special events throughout the year that you can attend including Christmas movie screenings with Street Food Cinema in December. Just five months after he and his family moved in, he was found shot to death by his longtime friend, Hugh Plunket. Through a selling of the estate and mansion to different developers and eventually the City of Beverly Hills, the entire grounds were dedicated as a public park in 1971 and is also the site of the city’s largest reservoir. They all enjoyed reading and had an extensive collection of books. Family Christmas celebrations were held there, and games were played year round. In the dining room a large table was beautifully set as well as a smaller table. The docent noted that there was no chandelier because Eleanor preferred candlelight. The smaller table was for the children and their governess. Eventually, they had four children and settled at their estate on Gaulker Pointe in Grosse Pointe Shores. To create just the right look and one that’s historically accurate, StudioEIS studied family photos, portraits and clothing. All estate policies, including prohibited equipment and estate guidelines, will be outlined in the photography session contract.
